Let me clarify, it's not that I am not a morning person. While I love my sleep, I often wake up at 5am to workout before work, but I am always scrambling to leave the house before 8.
I think I eat pretty healthfully, which adds to my dilemma because I won't just grab a scone or toaster strudel.. I am a cereal snob (most of it is junk), I try not to eat empty carbs in the morning, and I don't like to eat anything sweet in the morning because I never feel good. My ideal breakfast is an egg on sprouted toast, or in the summer I make a smoothie with protein powder (the only sugar is in the fruit). I just cant seem to find something that I continually like to eat, and most importantly get in the habit of making... I need help!
Here are some items I found to be a success for me (if I can plan ahead, or get my butt out of bed):
- Smoothie with banana, plain nonfat yogurt, frozen berries, protein powder, nuts, supplements. Not okay on snowy days like today!
- Kamut or Spelt flakes with almond milk, raisins and dried coconut. A quick option, like cereal, but gets old after a couple days of eating it.
- Egg on sprouted toast
- Egg scramble with veggies. I never have time for this, but sometimes get lucky an T makes it.
- Egg "taco" on a corn tortilla with vegetarian refried beans, a fried egg and spinach on top. Very tasty!
- Once I made these "quiche cups" but I made such a huge batch that by the end I was really grossed out and haven't made them since. Also I don't use egg substitute, it is a weird concept to me :)
What it sounds like is that I have plenty of breakfast options, I just need to plan ahead (for 5 minutes the night before) or wake up earlier. Seriously, why is this so difficult?
No one reads my blog (well my best friend, M, but that's it!), but if I had a bunch of followers, I would ask:
What is your "breakfast of champions" and how and when do you prepare it?!
I'm with you on the quiche cups. No bueno.
ReplyDeleteSince you asked...My weekday breakfast alternates between oatmeal and protein shakes. I have made a pretty good routine of putting the water on the stove while I hop in the shower while the water comes to a boil. After, I add the oats and some cinnamon, cover with the lid. Continue getting ready while it "cooks." Add almond milk, fruit, dab of honey and vvwwaaa laaa my breakfast of champions. It does take some time but I function so much better with a hearty breakfast in my system.
Some ideas...make a normal size yummy quiche ahead of time and heat up one slice a day; banana and a bar (lara, luna, builder bar); yogurt with fruit and granola (could make most the night before and add granola in the AM).
All great ideas! Today was Luna and banana. I will strive for oatmeal one of these days!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
i am in a breakfast food rut, and i love it. i make three scrambled egg whites, and sprinkle in feta cheese and a huge handful of spinach. takes maybe five minutes? and is super yummy.
ReplyDeletefunny you should ask this b/c just recently i made a goal to not eat just toast or cereal anymore for breakfast. now i alternate between scrambled eggs with a little cheese in them and salsa on top, peach yogurt with fresh fruit, and just these past 2 weeks i made a huge batch of steal cut oatmeal on sunday night with raisins in it and ate a little bit each day- heating in microwave. the kind derek and i eat takes like 30 minutes to make so this is the only way i can do it. i went through an OBSESSION with the steal cut oatmeal from trader joes in the frozen section but its sugary and a waste of cardboard and plastic. i also have a huge cup of tea every morning with lemon in it. i am like you- i prefer to sleep in till the last possible second in the mornings. but derek is one of those people who likes to sit, drink coffee at home, and read all his favorite newspapers online. he gets up extra early on wednesdays when some special section of the new york times comes out. so funny how we are all so different. xo
